From the mid-nineteenth century, the authority of Cardinal Paul Cullen (1803-78) was ubiquitous within Irish Society and the Anglophone world. His contemporaries spoke of the 'Cullenisation of Irish Society', a Times obituary celebrated him as 'an agent of great change', while a critical Joyce lampooned the cardinal as the 'apple of God's eye'. "Paul Cullen and his World", brings together international scholars to assess this legacy in a bi-located conference to be held in the autumn of 2009. The venues are closely connected to Cullen. He was founder of St Patrick's College Drumcondra (1875), and was both an alumnus and Rector of the Pontifical Irish College, Rome.
